HF Magnificent Seven 2016

Historical-Fiction
What did yo think of Ethan Hawke as a ex Confederate sharpshooter with PTSD?

I thought Hawke's character and performance were the best of the group. This version did more with the backstory of some of the characters than the original had, which I liked. It also took things from the characters in the first one and mixed them around -- Hawke had moments that in the original were done individually Robert Vaughan, Brad Dexter and James Coburn and I thought it worked for him. He reminded me of Christian Bale in 3:10 To Yuma -- the idea that what happened in the war haunted the character.

Hawke had to be a sort of southern gentleman and scoundrel with a heart. Sort of a damaged hero with PTSD. This must have been a fun roll but difficult to pull off properly.

Remakes should never be compared to the original. Remakes may be good on their on, but they don't usually measure up to the original.

Thank God Hollywood hasn't tried to remake films like Gone With The Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivargo and the Ten Commandments.

For me there is only one Magnificent Seven

I thought the PTSD in Hawke's character was good, too. Kind of reminded me of Kevin Costner's Union sharpshooter with PTSD in Open Range. My dad has a little of that from WWII - when I was a kid you woke him from long distance...lean over, shake a foot and yell "Wake up, Dad!" then duck! He would come awake swinging and he was a boxer.

I loved the original....but got doubts about this one. It seems Hollywood takes those old classics and just does no justice to them. How can you beat Brynner and McQueen and Wallach?

One question I do have is how true to the original story does this remake stay?
Broad concept is the same: town of poor farmers being terrorized by bad man and his gang; couple of townspeople travel to other town looking for hired guns to help them; find cool badass gunslinger(Yul/Denzel) who decided to help; he recruits 6 others, some he knows some he just meets; they teach townspeople to fight and battle bad guys and his men; not everyone lives.

Some details are the same -- Pratt even delivers (flatly) one of my favorite Steve McQueen lines about the guy falling off a building.

But a lot is different -- different kind of bad guy, different kind of town, different way the action plays out, etc.

Well Denzel's character had met the character of Peter Sarsgaard the villain in the movie, when his men had raided Lawrence. I was not sure that Sargaard was suppose to be Quantrill during the 1863 raid or lead the men in the 1856 sacking of Lawrence.

Don't mention Quantrill, the thread normally ends up something like this.... www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YA41ZjlW2E

I will watch it, as I love Westerns. Soundtrack not to my taste. I do prefer the oldies, but sometimes a modern film can do it for me. We shall see.
Thank you for posting the Trailer, Legion Para.

The Magnificent Seven is one of my all time favourite films. Return of the Seven was OKish, Guns of the Magnificent Seven and The Magnificent Seven Ride were both dire, truly awful, and then the short lived ,2 series ,made for TV programs, were terrible. I will go this week to watch this new remake but I go with some trepidation and with my fingers crossed.
On the plus side the remake of True Grit was pretty good and the remake of 3-10 to Yuma was very watchable.
