I inherited a musket from my Grandfather when I was about 10 years old. I have had it and kept care of it ever since! Looking to obtain any and all info that you knowledgeable folks have to offer! I have attached several photos that i believe will be of your assistance in evaluating the gun! If anything else is needed please let me know!

Thanks a ton ahead of time and I look forward to learning and retaining all I learn from this site! Would love to take a dip in the hobby of antique firearm collecting.

That is a nice Savage M1861. You should definitely be quite proud of her especially coming from your Grandfather.

Savage took over the M1861 contract from Parker, Snow, Brooks & Co. They were contracted to deliver 25,000 at $18 per unit. They delivered 25,520.

As a note I have records of M1861's marked Muir, Robinson, Savage, Springfield & Windsor issued to the 4th Mn VI in 1864.

Interesting! I can tell you I am beyond proud and love showing it off to guests that come over. Quite the conversation starter! My Grandpa lived in Wisconsin at the time he obtained it from a friend. Seems there's the potential that may align with your records with Minnesota being close by.

Is there a thread that educates on the various stampings and their meanings? What are the best routes to take for tracking these markings back through history and making links? Curious as to what the faint etching above the trigger could be?

I have reached out to Lodgewood.com to hopefully obtain a ram rod as it is missing.

I am ecstatic I have found this site and have been doing my reading! Tons of fascinating info.

Thanks again for the reply!

The M1861 was the standard arm in US Infantry units by the end of the war. The US didn't always keep like manufacturers together. I put the 4th MN VI up as an example. When they received their new issue of arms in 1864 it was not only a mix of manufacturers but also a mix of models to include not only M1861 but also M1863, M1864 some M1855 as well as some Special Model 1861.

I expect Lodgewood will have a ramrod. An original can set you back $250 but a quality repop is around $50. David Stavlo is a gent and will likely help you out.

The various markings are proofs and inspection marks. There are several books that cover the subject.

Depending on what you want to do via collecting the M1861 bug is a dangerous one as there are a goodly variety of manufacturers. As an amateur collector myself I've been aiming at one of every type of arm carried by the 4th MN which is 9-10 different models of small arm. M1816, Remington Maynard M1816, M1817, "Bright Belgian," M1841, M1855 Rifle, M1861, M1863, M1864 & Special Model 1861. Oddly enough I still don't have a M1861... Or an M1817 or Bright Belgian. I have a M1855 rifle musket instead of a rifle but I like it.

So just so you know... Stage 1: a rifle for ever day of the week. Stage 2: a rifle for every month of the year. Stage 3: a rifle for every week of the year. Stage 4: admitting you have an addiction.
