Looking for relatives of people who were in my relative's unit. This guy is of military age, two of his brothers were Confederate soldiers, can't figure out why he wouldn't have either been enlisted or drafted, but I'm not finding a record for him. If y'all could please help me check my work and be sure there's no service record that I've missed.

Robert Yancy Moses (could be RY or Robert or Robt or Robt Y).
Born 1834, Virginia
Resident Brownsville, Haywood county TN
Wife at time of war was Permelia. After war, America Texana "Tex" Moses.
Mother Nancy or Ann Moses.
Brother Thomas Jefferson Moses co. M 7th TN Cav
Brother James Phillip was a sergeant, then 2nd lieutenant co D 31st TN infantry
Richard Moses (colored) is listed as a private co D 31st TN and is a neighbor after the war - may have been James Phillip's servant.

Not finding a pension application attached to any of the women. It may be that because Nancy was a widow and Robert had a wife and young children, he was exempted in order to support them, or something similar, but in that case I'd like to find a record of that. He had a modest plantation and eleven slaves, not enough to qualify for an exemption as a slave owner.

I'm not finding a record for brother William Samuel Moses born 1836 either, but I think he may have died before the war since I can't locate him after 1850 census.

I have a good overall picture and tons of records on Robert Yancy, including his grave, censuses, marriage records, etc. Just can't find anything related to military service, which was unusual in West Tennessee.

Allie in Fold 3 records, there is a document in Confederate Misc filed as R J Moses but when I view the document it honestly could be R Y Moses. The document lists R ? Moses as a Master in CS Navy and seems to detail his capture by Union pickets. Dont know if that might be the man you are looking for? Do you have access to fold3?

Yep, I do. That Y gets read all kinds of ways because people aren't expecting it. He's RG once on the census.

There seem to be several documents relating to the RJ Moses in the Navy - none but the one you mention are originals, but they are all transcribed RJ. Looking at the one original, I think that's probably meant to be a J. Lacking further evidence, I'm concluding he apparently didn't serve, for reasons unknown.

I'm surprised none of these brothers ended up in the Haywood Rangers, since founding lieutenant HJ Livingston was a boarder at their mom's boarding house during the war.

Not much to go one but might be able to go to the courthouse in Heywood county. That is the date he married his second wife.
