John William "Billy" Adams, Sr
Green's Brigade under Capt. Horn in the Confederate Army,
(Capt. J. W. ADAMS) Don't know where or when Capt. was nail to him

His former brigade was assigned to Brig. Gen. Arthur Pendleton Bagby, who commanded it through the Red River campaign. Green's cavalry regiments, including the Fifth, returned to Texas during the winter of 1863–64, but with the opening of the Red River campaign in the spring of 1864 they returned to Louisiana to reinforce the Confederate Army ..

b. Aug. 25, 1844 d. Apr. 21, 1912 Bosque County
Texas, USA

Texas units can be very confusing especially cavalry but I believe this is him.

John William Adams, age 16 lived with his parents in Anderson Co, Tx in 1860. He enlisted as a private on October 15, 1862 in Anderson County in Company "I" 7th Tx Cavalry. According to Company "I" records, the third and last captain of Company "I" was C. C. Horn, promoted March 13, 1863. There is one service record listed under Pvt. William Adams (attached). I believe this is the same soldier as J. W. Adams. Bestowing the honorary title of "captain" was a common practice for post war veterans, especially if they achieved a level of prominence in the community, an officer in their UCV camp, or politics. Commanders of Texas cavalry divisions and brigades were changed frequently and confusing. One error often made was after Gen Buchel was killed at the Battle of Pleasant Hill. Contrary to the 7th Texas unit history at tshaonline.org, A. P. Bagby was promoted to Brig Gen on April 13, 1864 and given command of a brigade in Gen Bee's Divsion consisting of the 1st, 35th, and 37th Regiments of Texas Cavalry.
