It's worth noting that the 6th Penn. Cav. is probably better known as the famous
Rush's Lancers, the only Union regiment to be issued that traditional cavalry weapon. They served for a time as headquarters escort when George B. McClellan commanded the Army of the Potomac. In 1863 with the reorganization of the cavalry and creation of the Cavalry Corps
by Joe Hooker, they gave up their lances for regular cavalry carbines.
