F & S stands for Field & Staff - as Quartermaster Sergeant he would have been part of the Field and staff of the regiment.

The 2nd Provisional Pennsylvania Cavalry was created by consolidating the remnants of the 1st, 6th and 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry regiments in June 1865 before being mustered out in August 1865.

It's worth noting that the 6th Penn. Cav. is probably better known as the famous Rush's Lancers, the only Union regiment to be issued that traditional cavalry weapon. They served for a time as headquarters escort when George B. McClellan commanded the Army of the Potomac. In 1863 with the reorganization of the cavalry and creation of the Cavalry Corps by Joe Hooker, they gave up their lances for regular cavalry carbines.

Great picture! I am quite familiar with the 6th, and have a collection of books about them. I had the opportunity to appear at a living history event as Sargent Lewis Danfield of the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry
