Over the time that I "lurked" here and after I joined, I noticed people mentioning hard-to-find books they'd like to acquire. I should have started making a list then (that's why we have Excel :D), but I didn't get my act together until now.

Many of us enjoy shopping at Friends of the Library and other low-cost book sales.

Let's put those things together:
  • If you are looking for a hard-to-find book, please list it here. Give as much information as you can, including the top price you're willing to pay as Friends of the Library and AAUW sales often have a somewhat higher priced area for more collectable books.
  • If you are going shopping, please take a look at this thread. Perhaps you can help a fellow member out. Do be aware of the book's condition. If you wouldn't buy it for yourself in that shape, then you probably shouldn't pick it up for someone else unless they've specified that they don't mind "beat."
  • If you meet with success, please post that, too!

I'll throw one out here- The Battle of Mill Springs by Kenneth Hafendorfer.

I think out of print, but can still find online. So maybe not so "hard to find". I'm just not willing to pay the price (yes- tightwad).

So if you stumble across one at a yard sale, may want to grab it. If no interest in owning, you could (a) sell on eBay for $150, or (b) let me buy at a steep discount.

But I would recommend selling on eBay. Hey- a dollar is a dollar, right?😉

In another thread, @FSkiddy mentioned looking for these books for his Sons of Union Veterans camp education efforts with kids. These are all books for younger readers, ages 9-12 and 12 and above (Young Adult/Teen).

Gunpowder Girls: The Stories of Three Civil War Tragedies by Tanya Anderson
A Civil War Drummer Boy: The Diary of William Bircher, edited by Shelley Swanson
Conrad Elroy, Powder Monkey: The Role of the Navy in the Civil War by Alvin Robert Cunningham
A Separate Battle: Women and the Civil War by Ina Chang
The Civil War for Kids: A History with 21 Activities by Janis Herbert
Fields of Fury: The American Civil War by James M. McPherson
The Boys' War: Confederate and Union Soldiers Talk About the Civil War by Jim Murphy
A Nation Torn: The Story on How the Civil War Began by Delia Ray
Behind the Blue and the Gray: The Soldiers Life in the Civil War by Delia Ray
Young Heroes of Gettysburg by William Thomas Venner
Under Siege!: Three Children at the Civil War Battle for Vicksburg by Andrea Warren

Most of these are older books from the 1990s to early 2000s. The newest book is from 2016. Sale kiosks/book nooks/book closets in libraries might be a good place to look based on age. Condition might be an issue (although one would hope Access Services would choose withdrawn items in reasonably good condition to put up for sale, but age and Kids Room usually don't go well together).

Thanks for getting this project started off, @Sheltowee !

What a great idea! I wonder if there is a way to organize this so all of the requested books are together and potential helpful shoppers don't have to read the whole thread.....
I'm going to make an Excel list of the books that appear in this thread for my own use when shopping. Maybe a separate thread just for that list with the latest update being the last post? That's assuming Excel and the board play well together. I see that I could also save it as an XML spreadsheet or XML data. I've never done either of those, but I could play around with those choices to see what happens. If that idea flies, is there a way to lock out other posters to that thread so it's read only for them but I can add to it? Maybe just see the response first? I don't want to be more trouble than I'm worth!:cautious:

I think @CivilWarTalk is the person to consult on this!

So, I don't think a thread will take any of the native Excel files, too big of a chance that the Excel file could have malicious code in it when you download and run it on your own computer at home. Yes, that's a thing...

However, in Excel you should be able to save your Excel Document as a PDF, and that you can attach to the forum, any bad coding is eliminated in the conversion, so that's considered "safer".

Keep in mind you'd need to save your Excel document for further changes, and should you want to update the thread, you'd just save as a PDF again, and upload the latest version, maybe adding the version number in the file name (ie: booklist-v3.0.pdf)

One other thing we might do, is put the file in our Resources area, then when you update the file, it will always be the first file at the beginning, instead multiple copies in a thread, the last one being in most recent post about it.

I'll keep my eyes open for you. Of course, if I find one, I will have to keep it, at least for a month or two.🙂

The Old North State at War: The North Carolina Civil War Atlas by Mark A. Moore

UNC Press made 1 run of 1,000 copies in 2015 and then took it out of print with no ebook option. I missed a copy on eBay a couple years ago and haven't seen it elsewhere.
I've been looking for one of these for years. Would love to have this.

@FSkiddy , I ran your "want list" through AddALL, a used and out of print book finder aggregator. All titles were available, most for low prices (except the Chang book because it is newer and the Andrea Warren book on Vicksburg with only 1 copy for $17). If you buy through AddALL, they may earn a small commission on the sale, especially if the purchase is from Amazon. They state this at the bottom of the webpage. If the seller is Discover Books, there's a good chance the book will be ex-library (if that matters to you). I know my library has a contract with them to remove our "weeded" books.

In the Bloody Railroad Cut at Gettysburg (Hardcover) by Lance Herdegen Willing to pay $50-$75 for a nice copy.
James S. , @MarylandLine was correct in another thread when they mentioned that this title is fairly widely available at reasonable prices. Here are the AbeBooks listings that look to have several copies that would meet your criteria.

I also ran an AddALL list that includes sellers on other platforms as well as AbeBooks. I did omit any overseas and Canadian dealers for this list.

Look Away!: A Dixie Notebook by James H. Street

Hannibal Hamlin of Maine: Lincoln's First Vice-President by H. Draper Hunt
