Very interesting article sir. The question that springs to mind is WHO bought this surplus? Did any of the former Confederate lines have the wherewithal to make these bids or was it Union lines trying to get good deals to replace stock that was worn out during the war?

Maybe @DaveBrt can roll in on this...

The surplus rolling stock was mostly bought by southern railroads, many of them only able to remain in business because of these purchases. Most roads that bought locomotives only bought a couple and relied to a great extent on them while the railroad repaired its own, worn locomotives.
