longstreet

Lee should of listened to longstreet. If we would of stayed in virgina gettysburg wouldnt of happened

"We made a great mistake in the beginning of our struggle, and I fear, in spite of all we can do, it will prove to be a fatal mistake. We appointed all our worst generals to command our armies, and all our best generals to edit the newspapers."--Robert E. Lee.

dixieland1861,

Hindsight, the ability to look back upon history, is always 20/20. Too bad we are stuck with actual historical events that have already taken place and cannot be changed.

If Lee were alive today he might have added Civil War forum posters to the above comment also.

Just a thought.

Sincerely,

In historical fact, just staying in Va. was not at all what Longstreet, thought was needed. Remaining in Va. would not have saved Vicksburg or Chattanooga.

Longstreet was still yearning for independent command, but Knoxville cured him of his ambition. It is a shame that he was wounded at the time that he could have truly shown what he was capable of and when his services could have been put to best use.
