I am going to sell an original Light Artillery Saber. 1863 Ames. I have 2 questions about it. 1) is the the 3 a rack stamp and so, what is the significance? 2) mine looks like it was blued. I have not seen that often on Light Artillery sabers. Is this unusual?

thanks

Nice looking saber! I don't think you can read anything into the rack number. It could stand for the position it held in a barracks, fort, or armory rack. I've never heard of the blade being blued, but many that saw use have turned to a dull dark gray with age, which is what yours looks like to me.

Thanks appreciate the response

Looks good nothing wrong with it. I concur with Bob, hard to know what the 3 means. I have a Ames issued to a Connecticut unit but there is a 105 stamped on the hilt/branch and a 14 on the pommel. Then a 68 stamped on the scabbard. All small #s. Who knows? You mentioned selling I'd say that a $1000 sword, but thats just me.

Thanks appreciate the response. I thought it was nice. One of the better I have seen.
