Hi,

I hope someone can help me.

My name is Stephen Hosmer and I believe it, I am related to him about 7 generations forward from him. If you could tell me what you have on him I would like to know. Also if you have any links about him and what he did in life I would like to know too
Stephen HosmerI know that you have a lot on your website and I was wondering do you perhaps have anything about a Civil war person named "Jay Cooke".

Stephen Hosmer

There were more than 40 soldiers with that name (or "J. Cooke") so we'd need some more information in order to help you. What more do you know about him? Union or Confederate? What state? Birth, marriage, death, burial date or place? Name of spouse or children?

The career of banker Jay Cooke is treated in some detail in Matthew Josephson's The Robber Barons, the 1934 book the defined the great industialists and financiers of the Gilded Age as a bunch of crooks.

Also saw this on-line but cannot speak to its accuracy:

"The best biography of Cooke is Henrietta M. Larson, Jay Cooke: Private Banker (1936). An earlier work, drawing extensively on private papers, is Ellis Paxson Oberholtzer, Jay Cooke: Financier of the Civil War (2 vols., 1907). Indispensable to an understanding of the role and early development of merchant and investment banking in the United States is Fritz Redlich, The Molding of American Banking: Men and Ideas (1951)."

I want someone to send me some historical links about what he did and his family and so on.
I am NOT interested about books on him.
Stephen Hosmer

I believe it
As has been pointed out, there is more than one man with this name. While we all want to believe that our own ancestors are high profile, I'd advise you to research yourself back to be certain. You certainly don't want to spend a large portion of your life on the wrong individual.

There is on tree on him in Ancestry. It could be right or may have errors.

This is what they list as his Wife and Children. Maybe you can find a connection in your family tree if that is what you are looking for.

The author of the Cooke biography was also the editor of a series entitled "American Crisis Biographies". Included among the people are Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Alexander Stephens, Ulysses Grant.
A search of the "old" Google Books using "American Crisis Biographies" can find the editions that have not yet been copyright pirated into "new" print editions.
