The popular historical artist Don Troiani has produced an image of the 45th New York Volunteers equipped with common US Army 1855 pattern knapsacks. These had no internal frame, and were the most common type provided to US volunteers.

These recreations seem based on some photographs of US soldiers near Centreville, VA in 1862-3, whose arms (M1841 rifle) suggest were probably of the 45th New York. In these images they wear the common US Army knapsack, which modern vendors and wargamers call a "double bag" or "soft pack" (no such terms were used at that time).
