John H Winder - Question?

Welcome to the forum loudog:

Winder's sword is a presentation sword which means it was worn on special occasions. I'm sure Winder owned a pistol, but that doesn't mean he wore it daily.

Here is a thread on Winder's sword:

CONFEDERATE BOYLE & GAMBLE STAFF & FIELD OFFICER'S SWORD PRESENTED TO BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN H. WINDER IN RICHMOND JULY 15, 1864.... The sword was described in an article in theRichmond Daily Dispatch dated 23 July 1863 (a copy of which accompanies the sword) entitled "Beautiful Work Of Art": "We were shown yesterday a sword to be presented to Gen. John Winder, the blade of which is ornamented in a superior style of art. On one side is a design composed of scroll work relieved by fruit and flowers most gracefully and artistically arranged, and on the reverse is the inscription, "To Gen. J. H. Winder, from his friends, Richmond, July 15, 1864". Underneath are the flags of the Confederacy and Maryland, with appropriate designs. It is the work of Mr. Harry A. McArdle, a young artist who is engaged as draughtsman in one of the departments in this city"....

Prior to the Civil War John Winder served in the United States Army. During this time period he would have owned and worn a sword or pistol. Particularly during the Mexican War.

I actually have a old colt revolver I would like to sell.... 1861 navy I believe. What would you guess Winders pistol would bring at auction? Thanks I will be updating my profile ...picture and ect!

It depends on the type of pistol. It depends on the condition of the pistol. Most important of all, it depends on the provenance of the pistol. I don't think anyone will voice an opinion without further information and photographs.

Is there more to the name, like a first name or initials? Or provenance connecting it to the general? Playing devil's advocate, there were probably a lot of guys with the last name of Winder who owned a very common model of pistol.

There is no first name...but I did purchase it from a family that can be traced back to the general

Respectfully, you still haven't provided enough information. Condition is a factor and your photos only show parts of the pistol. Chain of ownership and provenance to General Winder hasn't been proven.

Take your pistol to one of the auction houses and let them appraise it.

I did know I had to prove provenance to you guys .... I actually purchased the gun from a John winder relative who I will not post just for privacy and he still alive. I have had hours and hours of research done to trace his family tree to John winder the general. I also acquired a colt letter from colt that lists the date of manufacture and place is was sent too.
