John H Winder - Question?

Obviously I don't have bill of sales person to person down the line . John winders pistol has never been sold or even seen before

I seem to remember this gun at a somewhat dubious auction in Maryland a couple of years ago, there were lots that had to be removed from the auction due to being fake. There was a confederate forage cap and uniform that were removed.

Major Richard B Winder's Army Colt Pocket was engraved in script Major R.B. Winder, CSA and was for sale by Heritage Auctions in 2000. He was the son of John Winder. John Winder would have had access to the finest jewelers in Richmond, since he was the Provost in Richmond and would most likely not have had the type of scratched engraving evidenced on this piece. Just my opinion, but I didn't think this was Winder's gun at the Tinonium, MD auction and still do not.

My apologies, I just looked up the auction notes and the pistol in question was attributed to another Marylander, William Goldsborough, it was a '51 and had dubious scratching at the butt.

The engraving is engraved in old English style text not sure exactly...it is worn and hard to see considering all the other dings and patina. I do have a pretty good family tree leading to this guy with my proof of purchase

My humble apologies, I just wrote what the Heritage catalog stated and did not check bonifides , in the for what it is worth category, they estimated the value in excess of $17,500 ('49 Colt Pocket), of course this was in 2000 and values have declined for just about all but the absolute best condition and provenanced pieces.
