I'm not sure as to why he was given command of the Texas Brigade after the Knoxville Campaign. I understand with the whole kerfuffle between Longstreet and Robertson over Micah Jenkins vs. Evander Law that the Texas Brigade needed a new commander, but why Gregg? Was there not an able Colonel from one of the regiments or did Longstreet not trust any of them after he sacked Robertson? I'm not saying Gregg wasn't up to the job but I don't understand why he was selected for command of the brigade instead of returning to his former brigade with the 7th Texas in it. Maybe Bushrod Johnson had a say in the matter?? He was his division commander at Chickamauga after all...

First, Gig 'Em. :) Second, if you're unaware, Hood's Brigade Reactivated meets in November in Huntsville, and for a few shekels you can attend and hear people who are real experts--not me. :) And you can ask if they don't answer all your questions.

Third, I might know the answer, but my mind is fried from teaching all day. Hopefully someone will come along with one soon. If not, I'll try to answer!

And obviously, there can be a pretty darned good answer....

@wayne jackson--are we gonna party? Susannah will be there...
Looks interesting! I'll look in to attending. I did a little bit of digging and became more puzzled. Why not Van Manning of the 3rd Arkansas?? He had already established himself as a proven leader by the Knoxville Campaign. I read a short little snippet of an article (doesn't seem like the most credible source though) online about Longstreet recommending him for promotion on Oct 17th, 1863, but there weren't open brigade command positions. So what changed Longstreet's mind come time to replace Robertson? Maybe some of our Razorback friends can shed light on this. Here's the link to the article. http://ardvscv.tripod.com/smoct96.html
