It reads "He died to set his brothers free", but it appears maintaining his memory is not free. In Akron Ohio there is a monument to John Brown. Over the years this monument has fallen into disrepair and been vandalized. I am sure we can all feel great anger over the vandalism, but what should be our view on the disrepair? The John Brown monument is usually fenced off and not available to the public.
Erected in 1910 by Akron's German-American Alliance for the 50th anniversary of Brown's hanging the monument is starting to need repair. There is also a push to move the monument to a new and more honorable place so the public can better enjoy it. The cost will be $100,000 and The Abolitionist Movement Fund is raising money very slowly to do this.
Should the monument even be moved or is this wrong?
Should the monument be allowed to slowly fall apart and history erased?
Who should pay?
