What was Joe Hooker doing after Chancellorsville? And how did he get his second chance in the West? Who stuck up for him or who did he know politically that got him assigned the command? Was this Grant's doing? Someone of Lincoln/Halleck/Stanton/Grant must have liked him. Maybe it was the cabinet? Anyone know the background?

A darling of the Radical Republicans. I think Lincoln liked him somewhat. Joe could fight as shown by his record as Division and Corps commander in AoP. It was his mouth that got him in trouble. In many ways he was toxic to those above him

Grant certainly thought he was and wanted to get rid of him from the beginning of their forced association but was unable to do so, likely for the political reasons mentioned.
