Compared to his other subordinates (Wood, Liddell, Govan, Granbury, Lowrey, even Deshler who commanded in one battle), very little is said about J. A. Smith, former commander of the glorious 5th Confederate Regiment.
Born in Tennessee 1st July, 1831 (33 at the time of Cleburne's death). Graduated West Point 1853, Fought Sioux in '55 and in the Utah War. Resign as 1st Lt.
Adjutant General to Leonidas Polk, rank of Major. Became Lt. Colonel of 2nd Tennessee (P.A.), part of Cleburne's brigade after Shiloh. Commended for bravery after Perryville by Bushrod Johnson and made Colonel of 5th Confederate. Fought at Stone's River and Murfreesboro, promoted to Brigadier after Chickamauga and commanded Deshler's Texas Brigade at Missionary Ridge until wounded and superseded by Hiram Granbury. Returned to command Texas Brigade at Battle of Atlanta, again wounded and Granbury became permanent commander of Texas Brigade. Commanded Olmstead's brigade (in reserve) in Franklin-Nashville Campaign. Absent at Franklin, made commander of Cleburne's Division (Lowrey, the senior Brigadier, was assigned to command Brown's division, which had lost all its general officers). Commanded at Nashville in defense of Shy Hill. Commanded amalgamated brigade of remnants of Bate's and Ceburne's division in Carolina campaign. Surrendered with Joe Johnston. Held several civilian positions in Mississippi post war until his death in 1901.

This is just a summary i lifted from Wikipedia btw. I've seen a couple of quotes from the Battle of Atlanta in Symonds' Stonewall of the West (which has portraits for Lowrey, Polk, Govan and Granbury, yet none for Liddell, Wood, Deshler, Johnson or Smith).
