I'm a descendant of Hubbard Brown (of Campbell County, Virginia), who did not survive the war. He was last seen in Co. F, 21st Virginia Inf. A muster roll for him in October 1864 showed that he was absent, and supposed to be a prisoner. I've been trying to find out what happened to him. I'm looking for some fresh ideas and resources. Is there a searchable index for Union prisons or hospitals? He may have gone missing at the Battle of Cedar Creek. Is there any searchable Confederate casualty report to search?

One receipt card has a notation (under "Remarks") that I can't decipher. Can anyone help with this too? It's shown below.

Welcome! Sorry I can't help, but I'm sure others can help. Meanwhile, I look forward to your perspective in our discussions! Enjoy!

Welcome From THE Heart Of Dixie. Be sure to stop by the Weapons & Ammo, Uniforms & Relics and Vicksburg forums. I looked thru other musters in this unit hoping to find something similar but could not. Lets see what @lelliott19 can make of it. She is a wiz with these things.

Greetings from Germany and welcome aboard from The Traveler's Companion and Soldiers, Politicians, & Other Men forum! :)

John Worsham who too was in Co. F of the 21st Virginia wrote a book "One of Jackson's Foot Cavalry." I searched through the book but didn't find a notable mention of Hubbard Brown, only a "Brown, A.H." who enlisted in 1863. If you want to read about the company's actions, here's a free copy: https://archive.org/details/oneofjacksonsfoowors/page/n9

Welcome from the Shiloh/Pittsburg Landing Forum and North Mississippi! Be sure and visit the Forum soon.

Welcome from Oregon! One possibility is that the word is "less," as in the nineteenth century, when a word had two "s"s together, the first was often written to look like an enlongated cursive "s" or "f." Or it might be "legs." Neither word makes much sense, though!
