Hello,
Need some help deciphering some hand writing on a back of a tintype photo. I have deciphered some, but need some opinions on some of it.

I'm reading: Cater Pope of Battleboro Nash Co NC presents to his his cousin John O Exxxx of Laxxxxxx AR, this picture was taken in the spring of 1876, age 33 years. I'm pretty sure the gentleman in the photo is Carter Pope, just trying to connect who the cousin is.

Carter Pope enlisted on April 19, 1861 at Yorktown, VA at age 18. He was mustered in to Co. I., 1st North Carolina Infantry (6 months). He was mustered out on November 12, 1861. He would have been present for the Battle of Big Bethel, but I believe Co. I was protecting the rear of brigade and might have not saw much of the fighting. On July 4, 1862, Carter Pope joined Co. F., 7th NC Cavalry. On the July 4th to Sept. 11, 1862 muster roll he shows absent - sick furlow. The next muster roll shows him absent - home without leave. The last muster card dated Sept 1 to Dec 31, 1862: duplicate shows dated May 5, 1863 - name appears in col. of names present cancelled.

Thanks for your time and opinions!
Paul

The writer does not use a double hump for his letter "n" as is typical with script. I note this in the way they have written the words "present" and "John" and "spring" so my guess would be that the name of the town is Lunenburg.

Does it say how old he is?
Also found:

Middle name looks more like a C.
Last name looks like Eanes or Eans.
Name of town looks more like Lunenburg

Lunenburg AK. There is no 'town' in that area but it lies South of Melbourne, in between three cemeteries.. It is classed as ' a small unincorporated community in Izard County, Arkansas'. It may well have been settle by folk from North Germany. There appears to be no church.

Ok, I think I might be one step closer thanks to all your help! I really appreciate all you opinions.

I believe the name in question is John Carter Earl (1849-1923). His mother's name was Martha Carter Pope (1822-1892). Martha had a brother named John William Pope (1818-185?) who is the father of Carter Pope.

John Carter Earl is listed in the 1880 Census living in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. John Carter Earl is listed on the 1860 Census living in Nash Co., NC.. Carter was about 6 years older than John C. and they must have known each other well during the late 1850's early 1860's.

I'm still searching the Arkansas town name....

Again, thanks for all your help!
