I think this is part of a snaffle bit. The mouth piece. Hope I'm saying that right haha. I've never seen one this style before, usually round. I had to bring it with me. Is this period? Earlier/later? Thanks for looking

It doesn't look like any bit I have dug or seen.
 
Definitely not - I don't know what it is - but it is NOT a bit nor any part of a bridle.

I've found a couple variations of these - usually associated with old homesites.

Its a 'frame' from an old wagon toy.

(See attached photo).

Yours is patterned most like the silver-colored example… and some crossmember features from the red.

What kind of detector you swinging?
