Is this Confederate? Opinions needed.

Came across this on ebay, and I'm very interested. It is a shortened bayonet from a Mississippi Rifle.

It is known that a lot of Confederate's shortened bayonets and sabers into a side arm.

Opinions? Thank you.

Its is a shortened saber bayonet but I do not see anything that screams CS. It could have been shortened after the war

To me, there is no way of telling what side used it.

I bought it. I really like it. I think it's a great piece that was possibly used by a Confederate. Couldn't pass it up. And it's going to look awesome in my collection.

I've also read about surplus Civil War swords that were made into fighting knives and issued as late as WWII. Just missed out on one on an auction site. This is the one I was bidding on but it got away.

Definitely has a Confederate look and feel to it. You can also see all the file marks on the blade. I am very happy with this piece! Man, the stories this could tell!

I doubt it was done during the war. As as not likely as not it was converted into a corn knife for post war agricultural work. The crude work with file and such point to an amatuer doing the work and the CS efforts to make weapons go further were anything but crude.

The file marks do not say CS as with a blacksmith made D guard etc.
