I remember this image when it came up for sale on eBay several years ago! I immediately recognized several faces after having seen them from my own USSS photograph collection and in several other collections or publications. Using the photo collage below, they are (clockwise):
- Charles D. Merriman, Capt., Co. F 1st USSS.
- William A. Shattuck, Cpl., Co. H 2nd USSS & VRC.
- Edwin Aldritt, Cpl., Co. A 2nd USSS & 1st Batt. MN Vols.
- John T. Schermerhorn, 1st Sgt., Co. H 1st USSS.
- Frank E. Marble, Capt., Co. G 1st USSS.
- Charles A. Stevens, Capt., Co. G 1st USSS.
- Charles J. Buchanan, 1st Lt., Co. D 1st USSS.
- Henry E. Kinsman, 1st Lt., Co. F 1st USSS.
- Frank H. Cobb, Sgt., Co. C 1st USSS.
- William Newell, Capt., Co. H 2nd USSS.
A few of the other veterans look familiar but I have not had the time to check my photo research database. The man at far left has always been interesting to me. He seems a bit rougher and almost separated from his fellow sharpshooters, and the possibility that he is missing his right arm and a left finger could possibly narrow down an ID for him. I've tried but only managed to study a third of the service records. Maybe in time he will be identified!
