I know it has a lot of issues but a friend had this for years and years. It came from the Hillsborough, NH area probably 50-years-ago. He knew I was interested in the Civil War and he said, "here take this."

I'm sure the hammer thing is new, and I think the thing has been cut down.

This came from the father-in-law's estate and he bought it in Hillsborough, NH at least 50-years-ago. Who knows where it came from before then!

I asked if this was his g-g-grandfather's gun from Fredericksburg, VA. No, his g-g-grandfather, threw his gun down and deserted back to NH "if this was what the war was about."

I think, someone took a surplused French M1867 "Tabatiere" or whatever, after surplusing made into cheap "Zulu" Shotguns and put the action in a Springfield stock to get a musket look. And that the hammer was an attempt to have one that'd fit before someone gave up.

At least that's my thinking, could be wrong.

Congratulations! On that.... I don't know what it is. There's a story on that I bet somewhere.

Well, whatever it is ... you are indeed a lucky Civil War Gal !

All of my friends know that I'm interested in all eras of USA and World History.

But I've only had two people say something similar and gift me a few artifacts.
An 1870s Swiss Army rifle tool kit, and a WW II Royal Netherlands Army helmet

:bounce:

Last Thanksgiving, at dinner, this cousin said he had this and wanted me to have it. I haven't seen him until yesterday and he gave it to me. So I imagined at least something that was kind of whole! He is used to guns and when he gave it to me he told me that he knew it had been converted and the hammer wasn't right at all, but even he didn't know the extent of the frankensteining of the piece. I kept thinking (the more I looked at it) "this isn't right at all" but I'm not going to tell him. He thinks he gave me a great CW rifle and I going to let him believe that. It meant a lot to him to give it to me and I'm not going to rain on his parade. Thanks everyone for trying to help me this! I won't be taking it to Antique Roadshow!

Hi, my question is: Does the breech block open? It looks like a conversion from muzzle load to breech load. Doesn't look to be an original breech loader.

I just took a look and honestly, I think it is missing. There is nothing to open or that will open.
That's rather interesting. It seems a rather large mechanism on the breech end for a muzzle loader. Wonder if the plunger looking device is a breech lock? It looks like the mechanism should swing open to the right. Perhaps it's rusted shut.
