Member Review Hunley movie

I think the movie "The Hunley" , with Donald Sutherland and Armand Assante, was a Ted Turner Production.
I love Sutherland ever since I saw him in the Dirty Dozen. Don't remember and can't see him as Beauregard. But who could be Beauregard except Beauregard? Larger than life... extremely larger than life.

It would almost take someone like Ted Turner with his deep pockets and interest in the Civil War to produce movies like Ironclads, The Hunley, Gettysburg, or God's and Generals. This new movie is said to be low budget, I wonder if the same props were used?

We're not talkin' recycled beards here?
There's only one I'd like to see again:

It's very low budget, hard to recommend unless one wants to watch everything ACW related.

But one thing it does better then many big budget films, is the working girls are average.

In it he asks the Dixon character, "Was I right at Shiloh?" Thought that was a bit gratuitous. Doubt if PGTB ever had any doubts.
I dunno. My thought had always been that he could have done better and he knew it. Second in command is still second. When Johnston was killed he took over in the middle of the battle.

With all that raging around you, getting your bearings could be a little tricky. Chain of command was broken. Also the staff got jumbled around. I had a relative who was aid de camp to Johnston and a couple minutes later it Beauregard.

Also Beauregard was an artilleryman. Yes, he could command ground troops. But he wasn't as effective as sighting in a field piece. I think he could have been much better utilized as Alexander. Perhaps in a larger, supervisory role.

A friend of mine once said that PGTB' s battle plan made no sense in English. It's been so long since he said it that I can't remember his exact words, but it was hilarious. Even when Johnston was in command, the plan fell apart, with fresh troops being sent to the sound of the guns, not to where the plan called for them to be. Not Beauregard's fault, but his plan after day 1 was to have the troops sleep on their arms and not form up any defensive lines. But really, I'm just saying that I doubt he would have asked Dixon that question. I shouldn't be trying to read his mind.

I am getting mixed messages about Beauregard's feelings toward the Hunley.Did he truly welcome it's presence or just barely tolerate it? There are many threads about the Hunley. In one, He let's it operate partially submerged after Dixon "begs and pleas".In another He confiscates it. In yet another,an urgent message is sent to Mobile that the sub needed in Charleston. He himself said it was "more danger to the user than anyone it was used against." He supposedly forbid it's use after 2 crews perished.I'm guessing it was needed but Beauregard was skeptical. He did tolerate it but was it welcomed with open arms? Was It possibly Richmond who gave the go ahead?
