How would one get involved in campaining?

Hi guys,
how would a reenactor get involved in progressive reenacting? I live in New Jersey and I would be interested in doing confederate immpressions. I am part of a standard mainstream Infantry unit but I would like to try out alittle more progressive event. Is their any units that participate in my area?

The thing with the AC it is not a place to go and ask questions like is done on here and a few other Forums. It is expected that you do your research and share that research so it may be discussed and authenticity improved. They are not exactly intolerant of "Fresh Fish" they just want you to use the search function to find your answers to the more basic questions. In some ways it hinders the site I believe, but on the other hand reading through the articles and old posts can be very informative. Besides all that it is a great place to aquire authentic gear at good prices.

Unfortunatly, JSL is no longer in business........he had some righteous stuff.

Reenacting has what some call the Sliding Scale of Imperfection.. Some call it History Heavy and history light

Farb: Nothing is really "right", if it looks old' timey and sort CW, its good to go, little attention paid to authenticity (History light)

Mainstream: The general run of reenactors, attempts are made at authenticity, some stuff not quite right, but attempts are made to make things look right May Contain Farbs and Progressives. Impressions can range from Museum quality to WTF?

Campaigner/Progressive/Hardcore: The History Heavy side of the hobby. Every attempt to the 3 Ms, (Man Material and Method) are made, events have standards particular to the event and the time and place being depicted. Details such as buttonholes, correct cut and material and constuction methods are insisted upon, weapons are defarbed, Personal Items are accurate, down to envelopes, stamps, and labels on prepared foods. Unless the scenario requires it, tents are limited to non existant. Meals are period correct with period foodstuffs, and soldiers often eat out their haversacks. Adherents to this stile are known to haunt museums, no matter how obsure, and libraries and historical societies. Some also become addicted to pieces of equipment, becoming Knapsack, or cartridge box , or jacket or hat junkies, and can often bang togehter a killer impression of the ANV in 1863 one weekend, and then another weekend be an 1861 Milita the next and Late War Army of the Tennessee the next. Some will buy special kit for one event.

General Anders is a member of CWT under "Anders."

They are probably coming off "Lee Takes Command" in Pennsylvania.

Maryland My Maryland is around the corner (September). I'm aware more Confederate slots are open with First Brigade, Southern Division - 26th North Carolina (Colonel S. Smith, Jr. Commanding).

Being in New Jersey, the 2nd Brigade might be closer though some men travel from 'all over belonging to the 1st Brigade under General J. Stepp.

I'd be patient with any E-mail contact of re-enactment groups on the East Coast due to that 'derecho' storm we had. So many folks in the DC area are still without power and Pennsylvania and Maryland got nailed too.

If Anders is thowing the shindig, it is well worth doing. There is a huge difference between
the authentic campaigner events and what Chris Anders does. Campaign style (re)enacting
is the opposite, really. No public in attendance to watch, eat rations out of your haversack,
careful study of the material culture in use for a particular scenario. You would have to be
at an odd place in life to have the time, money and mental attitude to go at it with that
degree of diligence. It borders on fetishistic. It peaked about ten years ago and has steadily
been losing participation.

The fact is, there are very few "actual" campaigners and quite a few who identify themselves
as such but do not get out for the events, or "keyboard" campaigners. I have always thought
events should be labeled (progressive, hardcore, campaigner, mainstream, etc) not the
participants.

Anders is DA MAN. or as we would put it A REAL BULLY BOY.

That said, I have a pet peeve about talking about FARBS to Authenics in terms of period gear and uniforms. The problem is not so much that as ATTITUDE. Learning to live the life, eat, sleep, talk, drill, and think like the man of the '60s is far more important that every stitch in place. I am a firm believe is you do the above items 1st and foremost, then over time you will because of your attitude, aquire better gear. Hence the term. PROGESSIVE.
