With respect to the general subject, and recognizing the value of accessing the media that was available during the war years and later, I would submit this link, which is one for digitized newspaper images hosted by the Library of Congress.

This is for a digitized image of the May 25th, 1863 Wilmington (NC) newspaper's front page. What is worth noting for general interest is the classified ad on the lower left re: award offered for a runaway slave, and immediately above it, one for the sale of land in exchange for slaves.
Certainly, all kinds of inferences come to mind- especially how currency was given value or in the case of the latter, not considered worthwhile.
