When we quote from a source, whatever it is, can we also note where (what website, what book, what whatever) we got the source from if it is secondary? If we're quoting from ORs, where did we get that OR? If we're quoting a particular historian, did we get the quote directly from the book, or from a review of the book, or from a website? It would really be helpful. Do you think?

There are many ways of gaining information from the same source. Where the trouble is, where it is a publication that cannot always be accessed by book, digital or other means. Not everybody can afford a Civil War Library or have time to look up things manually.

I think it is too much to require people to go into the extremes of details until it is warranted. Such as, when people pull out quotes and they are suspect. Parts of an official report, without giving proper label/title, volume and such, as to skew, alter, tamper with so much, as to fit into their agenda rather than placing before all the entire report provided by link, by reference, etc., so all can see for themselves. So too, with military manuals. They are good resources. Not all military manuals are online to read, some have to be read and transposed manually, e.g. The 1862 Army Officer's Pocket Companion - A Manual for Staff Officers in the Field.

Nothing will be perfect, especially when it comes to out of print books, magazines that are not digital and limited to subscribers, or personal diaries, etc.

I am not going to hold my breath--as it isn't required that people quote sources and such when they post. If someone does--I treat it as a personal opinion and move on. If there is a quote then references would be polite and most welcomed...but, that is just a personal opinion.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
M. E. Wolf

Nathanb1, ma'am;

Since you've gone to all this trouble, might the thread be retitled so people could use it as a way to look up quick references?
Only Rob9641 and edit Post #1 and Edit the Title --I do not have Edit control in this Forum. I would wait for Rob9641's input even if I could.

I have other remedies in mind to do the same thing but, put it into the area where references can be cataloged in the A-Z forum.

Just some thoughts.

That sounds like an excellent idea--and we'll let Rob take the initiative. I for one would love to both have something fast and easy to use myself and refer others to, AND to have it permanently somewhere in a compact and accessible form to showcase your excellent work.

I think the spirit of intent in all of this--is that we're able to help one another find our way to independent sources. I think giving links to research information will help keep minds fresh and add to the quality of responses. But, that is just me ...my opinion.

Like helping folks as best as I can and fast as I can but, there will be times I'll be away.

Have to have a pack of other Wolves to help this one Wolf.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
M. E. Wolf

Sorry I caused all the uproar. I wasn't actually referring to one of us doing it....I was thinking of Rob and asking if it seems a good idea to her. Then we can get it done.
Yep, it's a great idea to have an area of quick links, especially to original source material like the original ORs, and I thought so the moment I saw all the work Wolf had gone to. I just don't know how to do it. Thank you, Wolf. I didn't mean for you to justify everything you ever said! And I also meant for this business of saying what our source was to be voluntary, not mandatory. I for one will try to stick to it when I cite something - if I got it from a review or a website, I'll note that. I think it just helps and might short circuit debate over the reliability of the information so we can concentrate on the information itself.

So you would be interested in moving it and retitling so it would be an "instant resource"?

I would be very interested in such a sticky thread. There are thousands of resources that individual ACW fans know that would be invaluable to others.

If it is alright with you I will start it off by requesting any online sources or diaries concerning Patterson's Kentucky Engineers.

Please go ahead and request your info--no waiting on that, right? What I was thinking of was some obvious title, like "Shortcut to References" and people can continue to post new sources along with what M.E. Wolf has already put together for us today. Then we can all look reasonably smart

Just a thought... we could start by stickying this couldn't we? At least to keep it at the top until a name and location change is decided on.
