Help with uniform

Units North and South wore uniforms with black facings. Some of these photographs show frocks being worn and others show jackets being worn. How has this helped to unit identify your photograph?

I think I see a 9 button jacket or if you will a roundabout jacket. These were common pre war fatigue wear for many militia companies both North and South. It appears to be gray with dark flashes on the cuffs and dark collar and either dark epaulets or epaulets with dark piping around the edge. In general it looks to be a well made uniform.

This style was common enough in both Northern and Southern units at the start of the war. Without any cap, belt plate or any other way to ID this I would hate to offer a guess.

Thanks Bill. The story is it's from Georgia, but I am like you. Nothing clear cut and although it has pieces that match all the previous Georgia photos shown, there is not a direct match (not that there isn't something unknown out there). So although it may have a high probability of being from GA, there is no guarantee. Thanks for all of your posts and enlightening information!

You welcome. I said well made uniform to separate it from militia companies who had uniforms made up by local women's groups. There is a different look to uniforms made by tailors, the fit, the collar details ect. Are different. To me this looks like a fairly well made jacket. So when I research I can usually exclude jackets made by local women. No to say some women did not have the skill to make a jacket like this.
