OK, I looked at the list of all Union soldiers who had these conditions:
1) given name starts with "J";
2) middle name starts with "W" or no middle name/initial is recorded in the service record;
3) last name starts with "M";
4) last name ends in "Y";
5) last name contains no other letters which go above or below the line (e.g., t, l, g, p, etc.)
6) was enlisted or discharged as an officer, excluding surgeons and chaplains (note: yes, if he was an enlisted man, was promoted to officer, and then demoted to enlisted again, then I'd miss him. I would also miss those whose rank was not recorded at all). I also excluded those who enlisted and were discharged as CAPT or above (i.e., never a Lieutenant).
7) did not have a capital letter after the first letter of the last name (e.g., McCoy, McMurray, etc.)
These conditions aren't foolproof but I think that they are reasonable given the evidence.
I'm left with 22 candidates as follows:
I think that some more of these can be excluded by eye-balling it but I leave that to others.

Well, that would explain his ADC status - riding herd on all those flag-wavers.
