Does anybody know anything about this bayonet? Has a small muzzle ring ID of 5/8. Blade is 20"long and 1"wide. Overall 24 7/8".
No marks or numbers.Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Currently stumped. I'd say by the muzzle od at .625 and the steel scabbard with round frog stud, European center-fire, likely 1890-1910. Did a flip through of Janzen on the usual hits for this pattern and nothing. I'll do more digging tomorrow. Hopefully someone knows. (now I really want to know)

Great, thank you for the info. I'm wondering if maybe scabbard does not go with bayonet? Looking forward to any other information you may find

From an old College Hill Arsenal advert, it MAY have been a bayonet for the Sharps Rifles (1859) contracted for by the US Navy during 1861, but it should have markings on the ricasso and a number on the top of the hilt.
Thanks but there are no markings or numbers

I think it could be a Remington zouave bayonet for the m1863
With an id of 5/8 (which means barrel od 5/8) I don't think so. I'm thinking max diameter bore would be .45. Janzen's book mentions lots of randoms in his collection which couldn't be id'd at the time. His best guess was possibly Peabody/Martini. I hope it can be id'd as a Civil War era bayonet. Interesting blade for sure. Research to be done. Take care!

Well, it would appear that you've all gotten it wrong! If you look at auction 166594501951 on eBay you will see that this is actually a RARE Civil War Saber Bayonet Confederate Sharps Small Caliber Sharpshooter Rifle. Bidding is currently at $122.50. I can't help but feel that the hilt has been over-cleaned in the past; it has that patchwork appearance. Did they use all-metal scabbards for saber bayonets before the end of the Civil War?

If the bayonet fit into it and can be withdrawn without any great effort, it is the right scabbard. These bayonets are far harder to be fitted with other types of scabbard than the straight blades bayonets.

Don't trust all that ebay ads claim.

Love it. Confederate and sharpshooter.

This is a Navy Sharps rifle with bayonet. Looks right.

Trouble is, so does the M1863 'Zouave' but both appear to have a traditional leather/brass scabbard.

Ther is also a Froelich saber bayonet for locally made rifle of N Carolina which do not seem to be numbered on the top of the grip. Hmmm.

Would that small diameter ring fit these?
No. Sharps barrel od is .800+ and the Remington 1863 2 band rifle is a 58 bore. I don't think the bore for the op's bayonet would be over 45 caliber. I'm not aware of an all-steel saber bayonet scabbard 1861-1865. Not saying it doesn't exist, I just am not aware

The Navy Sharps M1859 was .51" The proportions look the same, but .... A quick dive online would confirm the absence of metal scabbards for bayonets at that time, but it is not a later French scabbard as they have a square loop attachment, not the button. The British ones had a button, but were steel/leather.
