Once again.....I need some help with uniform info. Anyone?

The sack coat is more typical of a later war image.
The buckle is not oval, but square, and so for a
Union soldier this is likely an eagle sword belt plate.
Since he appears to be a Private... more than likely he
was in the cavalry. An officer might have had an eagle
sword plate, but he does not look commissioned, nor
does he look to be an NCO.

I have to agree--he is a private. I checked it out in the very fine catalog that I ordered my Confederate officer's frock coat from.

Could be 7th MS. What about the collar? Does it look double to you? And how common is the upturned brim?
You know, I ordered a Union officer's frock coat from C & C Sutlery in Idaho (Emmett)--it is VERY true to authentic and quite attractive! Just FYI if you wanted anything like that. Reasonable, and quality work...
