Tell me more! Canteen ID help

This canteen is a recent acquisition. It looks to be a mid-war New York similar to canteen #177 in O'Donnell's book. The stopper and chain appear to have been replaced at some point, and the cover either repaired or replaced as well. I also can't find any info on the painted markings. It appears to read "GROWLER 5 Co. H" on the front, and "IIC. II" on the rear. Looking for any info. Real deal, or elaborate fake, I appreciate your input.

The only 1860s wartime Growler on the indexes who served in a Company H, was Charles Growler who served with Company H, 42nd Illinois Volunteers.

Might I suggest the possibility of post-war Militia/National Guard use. As of 1890, it was noted many such corps were yet employing the "old pattern" knapsacks, haversacks and canteens...
