Hey all, l have an 1861 that l would like the experts to look at. Lock and barrel are 1862. Barrel has PV eaglehead. Two cartouches on left side of stock. “US” on buttplate. Everything looks how lt should (from my little knowledge). My question ls, ls this just a really good condition Springfield? Was lt cleaned? Restored? Not sure how to tell how original these things are. l have many other 1861’s but this one just looks so nice I’m not too sure. lphone pictures kinda stink, sorry.

May I suggest that you remove the barrel and check the metal for markings? There is a cottage industry dedicated to “defarbing” Italian reproduction muskets to be true to originals down to the inspection stamps and markings. Typically the serial number and Italian marks are moved to the bottom of the barrel.

Could very well be a defarb. Could also be a "parts gun". Some are assembled from original parts with a couple new ones from the repops.

Thanks, here’s a photo of the barrel. l see an “S” that’s similar to the one on the trigger. Guessing that’s for Springfield. A “p” and bigger stamped letters “J.M.” Theirs some corrosion that makes the metal lnbetween the “JM” and “p” illegible. Maybe theirs something their, idk Theirs also an “e” under the piece that holds the nipple.

Its an original that has been heavily cleaned. At some time it had some pitting. The back of the hammer where its not easy to get to, to clean is the tell tell sign.

Also, If you look at the bottom of the trigger guard you can still see some pitting. But still a NICE Piece.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing the photos! And thanks to all for the good information!

Someone did some very nice work cleaning up that piece. She is an original beauty that I would be quite proud to own.
Thanks! l don’t know much about these caplocks. Since lt was cleaned does that hurt lts value quite a bit? l actually have a few that l will be posting on here for everyone to give me info on. All of them are real 1861’s/63’s ln various conditions. lm a flintlock guy myself, make my own BP. Just recently got lnto the world of caplocks.

Would you recommend not firing these antiques?

Tyler,
This a beautiful gun. Thank you for posting the close-up pictures. I am rather new to this site. I would like to find a Springfield, can you recommend any places for me to look? Did you find yours online, guns shows, etc.?
