Some might say Longstreet at Gettysburg, but I would disagree with that. There were plans to put a memorial to Longstreet at Gettysburg a LONG time before the movie "Gettysburg" came out.

There is more to the story. They didn't want confederate veterans putting up monuments so they agreed to put up this marker to Armistead. I need to find the full story on it.

The confederates wanted to put a memorial up to commemorate breaking the Union line at the Angle. The Union veterans were dead set against this and compromised with a marker on the spot where Armistead was shot.

Makes sense. Since the war was only 22 years past feelings would still be very strong with veterans of both sides.

Well, if it was a general who became popular after "Gettysburg", my guess would be Joshua L. Chamberlain. Yes, he was a colonel in the battle but he was promoted to General before the war ended. Chamberlain's character was one of the most popular and the general went from being an obscure officer to a hero of the War.
Was there a statue of Chamberlain and was it erected after the movie?

Called Friend to Friend this was erected by a Masonic organization on the slope of Cemetery Hill just outside the National Cemetery. ( And possibly on private - that is, non-park - land. ) It depicts Armistead giving his watch to a Union officer and fellow Mason to whom he had shown the "sign". I forget when the movie first came out, but I took this photo of the then-relatively new Masonic Memorial in the mid-1990's.

Both movie and monument were 1993. I'm not sure but I believe the monument was first.
