I have been looking into my family's history and am quite sure that I have several ancestors who fought in the Confederate Army during the War. Right now though, I have trouble knowing in which companies.

There were several companies mustered in Habersham County in GA. during the war that went to the AOT, while some from the next County over went to the ANV. The ones that went to the ANV have my surname, but are from the wrong County, though it's possible that my folks moved after the war to Habersham where they currently are.

I would like to know if there are any good sites from looking at company records, and if there is a good source for finding if my folks moved or not.

Any help would be welcomed,

Sincerely,

Dagan M. Chambers

I have had a ton of luck using ancestry.com's civil war soldier database; yes it requires a subscription but I have found a ton of useful information.

No credit card or bank account  Makes it difficult to pay online, sadly sites tend not to take checks or mail orders.

I'm not sure if I follow the question. However, I would say it is highly possible that one of your ancestor traveled to the next county to enlist. I can imagine several reasons why he would do this.
Also, I have looked at some service records and it would say the company was formed in another county. In one case, I'm sure they joined in their home county but traveled to another county were the companies were officially formed and entered training. Another group of soldiers I have been studying were from various counties but they listed one town as the place where they enlisted. Sometimes I wonder if the archivist who recorded the data made an error.

I recall that Habersham County was excused from conscription until 1863, would they have had to travel to another county to enlist if this were the case?

I just found on this site http://24thga.org/ that a few men sharing my surname of Chambers were mustered out of the 24th Georgia Regiment at Appomattox.

I'm curious now how to figure out if they were actually related to me, has anyone here had good luck at the Mormon Libraries, or are there better resources out there?

This is the Mormon Church Site. https://familysearch.org/#start Its free but you have to create an account. A lot of their Civil War info is free. What's not, will take you to fold 3, where you need a paid subscription. http://civilwardata.com/ this is $25.00 for a years access. They've got quite a bit on the Georgia troops.

Dagan,
If you give us some names to check out, some of us with Fold3 and/or Ancestry accounts will be happy to help you.

I found that of the 24th Georgia regiment, J. W. Chambers and T Chambers, share my name. The former came from White county, which is the county next to when my family lives today, Habersham. I don't know where T. Chambers came from, he's not listed in the company that the other is in.

T. Chambers if I recall was the name of some great-grandfather back there, who got it from his father, could be something.

A family name that gets passed down is Trelman, which could have been corrupted from Trailman, so if you find those as a first or middle name y'all would probably be on the right track.

My paternal grandfather's name is Bobby Trelman Chambers, his father's name if I recall correctly is A. J. Chambers.

Any help I can get is welcome...
