I think that it would make more sense to buy matzo, as it would be kosher. The kettles used by the army would not be kosher, because God only knows what had been cooked in them.

Things to remember:

1). One doesn't need a rifle butt or hatchet when cooking/eating matzah.

2). One can use hardtack in lieu of canister or grapeshot when low on Artillery ammunition.

3). Hardtack is generally smaller than matzah and easier for a soldier to carry in his haversack or knapsack.

Probably in a dutch oven, like the early settlers used in an open fireplace, in this case, the campfire, with coals on top of the lid. @Albert Sailhorst knows a lot about outdoor cooking. He can probably tell us.

Yep....coals under the Dutch Oven and on the lid.....The number of coals will, obviously, dictate the temperature at which the contents are cooked/baked.

No it is not eric's site.I forget the name of his but it is cavalry related in name and content.emerging civilwar site has alot of authors on it who have done the "emerging civil war" series of books mostly by Savas-Beatie but includes lots of others.it covers the ACW from A to Z.
