Thank you! Had a hard time finding out. Even in books I have looked at that had this image the caption said Grant posing, or Resting or something but never said where! LOL

No problem. I think that is my favorite picture of Grant. It seems to capture the essence of the man.
 
Posing. All photographs were posed. On occasion a photographer could find troops at rest and when he could be assured they would not move during the long setup and exposure.

One of my favorites is the one taken in Frederick, Maryland from the second floor of a house down upon a Confederate column. One soldier, rifle on his shoulder, turns, looks up at the photographer. I tried to find a good copy online, but nothing very good. Maybe someone has a good copy to share.

Another good one is Union troops outside Petersberg

Forgive my ignorance, all you military guys...but the black soldier on the right in the Petersberg photo -- is that a fife at his side? Is he a company musician? (For all I know, it's a horse crop....sorry to be dumb...)
