Case: Private David J C Campbell Co E 5 Virginia Infantry. 36 years of age, alleged that he received a "gunshot wound at the battle of Payne's Farm November 27, 1863 fracturing his jonic[sic] bones" and asks to be permitted to appear before this Medical examining board of General Gordon's division for the purpose of being relieved from the service. The board, consisting of Surgeon John H Newton (or Stevenson?), PACS, Surgeon W J Arrington, PACS, and Surgeon C C Henkel, PACS, reported that they have carefully examined said soldier and find him permanently disabled for duty in any branch of the military service by reason of gunshot wound of left hip, ball entering near the trochanter major, and lodging in the bone in the vicinity of the hip point. The wound is still discharging freely and spiculae of bone are coming away. The injury was received in the line of duty and unfits him for any duty.

Feb 12, 1865 - Appears on a Register of Receiving and Wayside Hospital of General Hospital No 9 Richmond Virginia
Admitted: Feb 12, 1865
Disposition: 30 Jan Retired 1865
Date: Feb 13, 1865
Remarks: W. (wound)

In summary, without being able to view copies of the records from the Hospital at Jordan Springs Resort, and since he is listed as "present on the June/July Muster Roll, and without any evidence to indicate otherwise, I would suppose that your relative could have been discharged from the hospital and present with his regiment at Gettysburg. But since the regimental roster says that he returned Aug 15, 1863 so there was probably some evidence that is not included in his carded records.

Thanks for doing all that digging. I learned a lot from what you posted. I'm very new to looking into records. I have read about the civil war even as a small child. I find the research enjoyable.

My name is Josh I'm new to civilwartalk.com I'm from East Texas. I should have introduced my self first I got excited and went ahead and posted lol.
There is a lotta Civil War history in East Texas... Jefferson, Marshall,Tyler and Rusk for example. There is a really good Museum in Bullard too.

You are very welcome. Reading carded records is something of a challenge. Since the cards are not always in order and since the medical records are usually at the end of the file, I find it helpful to create a chronological list of the information contained in the records. It helps me connect the dots. Happy I could be of service.

I should have said it earlier.....Welcome aboard!

Like @AndyHall said, we sure hope you will be a regular here!

Congrats! I found out that Henry Francisco Whipple who belonged to the 154th New York and captured at the brick yard fight July 1, is my fourth great uncle. He was sent to Andersonville and died there of pneumonia.
