Is this button a Civil War general service button or post war? I know there's a difference in the eagles, but not sure what it is.

Ok, so definitely not Custers 7th, but also definitely an IW kepi. Here are some questions: could it be 7th Cavalry but not Custers command? And it's my understanding that the false embroidered crossed sabres that are crossed low, are typically CW insignias: would they be on an IW cap? Lastly, I thought CW kepis had the band around the cap sewn integrally: if my cap is an M1872 kepi, would it have this feature, as mine does?

The first picture is a non dug enlisted badge. Picture two is Indian war, the scabbards are thinner and the over all size is smaller than the 3 inch civil war piece.You can see the loops coming from the back. This is what I mean by loops and not stick pins. The third is an officer piece much like what yours is. The hat photos are all post war. You can see the lighter tan sweatband as opposed to the dark brown sweatband found on many civil war pieces. The directly embroidered letter is another post war trait. Civil war badges are backed in velvet and attached to the hat. Not directly put on the hat.

@Copperdragon333 Here's a history of the Seventh Cavalry: https://www.history.army.mil/books/r&h/R&H-7Cav.htm.
Many other Civil War officers (not just Custer and Benteen) served in the Seventh, such as Colonel Andrew J. Smith (Second California Cavalry), Majors Alfred Gibbs (Nineteenth New York Cavalry) and Wickliffe Cooper (Fourth Kentucky Cavalry), and Captains William Thompson (First Iowa Cavalry) and Robert M. West (Fifth Pennsylvania Cavalry).
