Were Confederate privates allowed leave back then? I'll admit I don't know alot about The Civil War (yet), but was curious as to know. My reason for this is my ancestor Prvt. Boney Roe was in the war for 4 years (including capture in Tennesse then prisoner time at Camp Chase, Ohio)...his wife had a child during the time he would have been at war 1861-1865. Any help is greatly appreciated. Let's hope the kid was his lol.

I've seen numerous references to furloughs, particularly when troops were close to home, such as the Tennessee troops camped around Shelbyville, TN following the Battle of Murfreesborough.

Thanks guys. I need to buy that fold3 membership, because I'm sure those index cards will reveal much more. I browsed 3 of my relatives from the quick view, and I could read some of the cards. Absents and presents.

Check with your public library - some subscribe to Fold 3, and you can access it for free.
