Well, sort of. It turns out that my ggg grandfather was a first cousin of Richard Henry Garrett who owned the farm where Booth was killed. That would make me a first cousin five times removed of Richard.

I rather doubt my ggg grandpa actually knew Richard as they lived on opposite sides of the state and were only related by uncles but it's still a cool find for me.

Just wanted to tell somebody (nobody I know or am related to cares a whit). "What Garrett farm ?" "John Wilkes who ?"

Shame on you! I should think you'd be ashamed to learn such a disgraceful thing about your family!

Very neat, John! Does this mean you're also related to Sheriff Pat Garrett?

I don't know. I've never tried to look into his line. I rather doubt it as Garrett is a fairly common name but you never know. Would be a very distant relation if so. Do you know anything about him ? Did he come from Virginia Garretts ?

I just stumbled upon the other relation while trying to extend my Garrett line info back a little farther (just for fun). If Pat Garrett were related somehow that'd be way cool.

Actually, I believe Pat Garrett is a distant relation of your Garrett - seems I read that somewhere looking into the Booth stuff. Something about the original immigrant being the same ancestor. It's sort of how Jeb Stuart came to be Robert E Lee's fifth cousin and Mary Lee's fourth - back when there was a shared Randolph on Lee's side, and a shared Dandridge on Mary's side!

Well OK then ! I'll take it, especially if you say so. I think it would have to be waaaay back though.

Some time ago I was interested in Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett - maybe @Nathanb1 would know. Garrett was from Alabama but said he had family in Virginia. Right now I'm having a hay fever attack and can't think of my own name but I'll take an anti-histamine and see if I can re-discover what I used to know about the sheriff!

That would be doubly cool, wouldn't it, to have a connection with both Booth and Billy the Kid!

Yes, it would and thanks for volunteering to do that bit of research. I do appreciate it. I can add that to my Garrett connection to Thomas Jefferson (which is pretty close although not in the biological sense). I do wonder what my mother would have thought had she known any of that (maybe nothing much as she wasn't at all interested in family history; thus me knowing nothing at the time of her death).

Oh, maybe we're cousins - I'm related to Jefferson through Pocahontas' brother...or sister...one of Powhatan's bazillion kids! :D

I wish. My connection isn't biological. The elders were just adjacent neighbors, business associates, good friends, founders of Charlottesville and co-founders of the U. of Va. and such. Still, it's a connection.

OK, so I went to Ancestry and was able to discover that we are related but, as I thought, really really a long way back.

Pat's gggg grandfather, Thomas (1674-1734) was brother to my - get this - ggggggg grandfather John (1675-1728).

At that distance I'm probably related to millions of people. Still, thanks to you bringing it up I can now casually drop that little factoid in conversation should an occasion arise.:smug:

Well I guess you're famous and too good for us now! :bounce:

Hey now ... any relation is just a matter of chance that I had nothing to do with. I'm always honored to be accepted (mostly) into this community. I'll never be anywhere close to as knowledgeable about our mutual interests as a good number of our members. So, just a guy who made a fun discovery.

Should I ever get famous I promise to remember that I knew all y'all (yes I know my plurals) back when.

Oh, now that's really good. :D That makes the connection! I've got a shirt tail connection to a famous escapade, too - one of my ancestors was working for Tallmadge as a courier and helped capture John Andre...by outrunning his horse!

Those are good finds for you. I guess it is people like us on this forum who are interested in their ancestors and their connections to history.

Everyone in my family could care less. But they do spark up interest when find someone that was important they are connected to. I had to beg my cousin for some old photos of the family. She didn't even want them and was about to throw them away.
