So by now we were scheduled to be on our way on a 3 week camping trip to Georgia with many stops along the way including some CW sites. I was looking forward to refilling my photo files with some new stuff. So since that is postponed for who knows how long, as I am sure it is with everyone, today let's dig deep and post what you think is one of your favorite photos. Mine is simple. It is my son and I a couple years ago at Gettysburg. We found a group that was representing the 141st PVI Co A. We had 9 ancestors in the 141st and 5 in Co A. Spent some time with these guys just talking about the Regiment and what they went through.

Pretty much all of my recent Civil War exploration has been here in Raleigh, NC, where I've been tracking the locations of the 5-6-mile ring of fortifications built around the city in 1863.

To me, this is one of my most interesting photos. It's take from modern-day Chavis Heights, a hilltop where one of the artillery batteries was built. This photo is taken facing inward toward the city center, the area being protected by the CW works. Raleigh's works were probably manned at times during the war by militia and regular army, but maybe not strongly, as Union forces never came closer than about 50 miles, until Sherman's Carolinas Campaign. After the Battle of Bentonville, the city was surrendered, so there was never much fighting here.

In 1860, the Raleigh city limits only took in 1 3/4 square miles. Population was 4,780 in 1860. Today, Raleigh has 143 square miles and a population of 469,000.

My ancestor was literally right at this split in the road east side of Hardeman County, TN. They were to guard this fork in the road from the rebs.

This spot was part of the stops on the way to the Battle at Little Rock. Why I like it, even today shows what the water was like for the men. Ashley's Mills, Arkansas.

It seems to be a simple fence line, but beyond the fence is the site of the slaughter of the 42nd Indiana, at Doctors Creek, Perryville.

Bowman's Mill Ford
In the early morning hours of October 19, 1864, in a surprise attack, Kershaw's division crossed Cedar Creek here - at Bowman's Mill Ford. Bowman's Mill Ford should not be confused with 'Bowman's Ford' which is one used by part of Gordon's division.) Kershaw deployed his old brigade (commanded by Goggin) to the left; Bryan's brigade (commanded by Simms) to the center; and Humphreys (Barksdale's old) to Simm's right. Wofford's brigade was the last of Kershaw's division to cross Cedar Creek.

This was on Mother's Day 2017. I was on a business trip to Arlington, VA and decided to take a trip to Antietam. This was the entrance to Bloody Lane. I was walking alone as no one else was around. A bit eerie but an amazing experience.
