Found at 1870s church/ union cavalry site. It's my first flat button. Didn't know if it's possible to ID it. Shanks gone. It does have a shape on front in certain angles/shadows. The back has writing can't make it out. I don't know if I have the pic right side up either .

Try getting closer to the button. It's very difficult to see the details or make out the stamping from that distance
I cleaned it with Andre's pencils but not to much , in certain light/angles appears to be a symbol or eagle maybe

Flat buttons predate civil war 2 piece and 3 piece buttons by a good amount of time. We have to have a close up of the button sides. It's possible to have an eagle on it. We've put eagles on military buttons since the start practically. Civilian buttons would have scroll work or geometric shapes or even floral designs

I'm not sure how to clean the flat button to see an impression without ruining it

This is the best image I can get after rubbing it with some talc powder

Rub some talcum powder on it and see if something materializes.
Yep that works well as does a soft lead pencil and paper and do it like a grave rubbing
