Finding ancestors journal

Hello all!

I'm hoping that anyone can point me in the correct direction to find a copy of my ancestors civil war journal. Two brothers, Chester and Chauncey Cronk fought in a New York regiment during the war. I know for sure that Chauncey kept a journal as I saw a copy online for it years ago, but I haven't been able to relocate it. We have some pretty awesome heirlooms that have been passed down through the years (family bible that dates back to 1840, civil war regiment reunion ribbon, etc) but nothing written by the brothers to give us more insight into what our family specifically went through. Any help would be great appreciated!

Wow! How awesome to know this resource is out there, even if you haven't yet put your finger on where it is. Can you tell us a bit more about them? That might help locate the journal.

@Tom Elmore you quoted from the Journal of Chauncey Cronk in this thread - do you know where the OP can find it?

I know that they fought at Gettysburg where Chester was injured in the leg but survived without amputation. They must have been young men when they enlisted because we have family photos of Chester from the 1910's.

Per the footnotes, a copy of the journal transcript is in the collection of the author "Jeffery William Hunt" (he hang out here? contacting him would be easy then).

I copied a portion of Chauncey A. Cronk's diary (Company D, 64th New York), as transcribed by Douglas J. Mergler, in 2005. Namely, Section 3, covering the period June 10 to July 21, 1863, total of 13 pages. If you would like me to scan these 13 pages to you, I would be happy to do so if you will start a "conversation" with me (at upper right).

You might want to ask family members, close and distant, to see if perhaps they have the original in safe keeping. Also contact the libraries and historical societies in the town/s that may have the original, for historical research. I inherited a journal my g-g Aunt kept, during the CW. It has remained in family hands to this day. Mom contacted the Georgia Historical Society for some information regarding info in the journal, they asked mom to donate it to them. It stays in the family, thank you.

Thanks! That would be great… how do we start a conversation though? I didn't see where to click

The third item from the right in the blue bar at the top of the page is a small envelope - click that and a box will open allowing you to start a new conversation.
