Favorite Flags.

I prefer the Pennsylvania State Colors. This one for the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was at most of the important eastern battles in the second half of the war. It stood on Little Round Top and at the surrender ceremony at Appomattox.

A clever cheeky insult, in this case using Virginia's own motto against them, showing a black soldier giving no quarter to a defeated Confederate one, under the Virginia motto "Thus always to tyrants."

And making a point that the institution of slavery was run by a bunch of petty tyrants.

The "Wigfall" flag of the 1st Texas Infantry Regiment. Was partially made by Mrs. Wigfall's wedding dress, wife of one of the first Colonels of the 1st Texas and later senator Louis T. Wigfall. The 1st Texas, in Hood's Texas Brigade, carried it through Elthem's Landing, Seven Pines, Seven Days battles, Second Manassas, South Mountain, until at Antietam where the 1st Texas lost 82.3% of its strength in the cornfield. The Wigfall flag and their AoNV battle flag were both lost in the cornfield. They were later found by Federal troops surrounded by 13 dead Texans. All eight of the color guard were killed.

Also always liked the battle flag of the 1st and 3rd Florida Infantry

And the 3rd Texas Cavalry

According to the regiment history of the Penna. 93rd volunteer infantry, the first flag they stood behind battle was returned to a Mr. Coleman, nicknamed "father of the regiment" for his financial support, after several years of service. It was preserved in a case in Mt. Lebanon, PA with the following inscription:

"You have carried me from November 5, 1861 through the siege of Yorktown, the Battle of Williamsburg, Fair Oakes, Malvern Hill, Antietem, Fredericksberg, Mary's Heights, Salem Heights, Gettysberg, & Rappahonnock Station."

I would like to know where that flag is on display now...hmm....
