Bensearch – Regarding the 93rd PVI Flags
In Advance the Colors (Vol. II, pp 319-20), Rick Sauers describes the 93rd presentation colors:
George Dawson Coleman, a Lebanon iron ore magnate, took a special interest in equipping the 93rd. He provided the regiment with at least two flags. The first, a 37-star national color, was given to the regiment on November 5, 1861. The inscription "Presented to the Coleman Guards of Lebanon, Pa. by G. Dawson Coleman" was painted among the stars. The banner was carried alongside the state color until December 1863. Private Fittery carried this color at Fair Oaks, where he was mortally wounded on May 31, 1862.
Coleman provided a replacement flag to the regiment on Christmas Day, 1863. This 34-star national color was inscribed with battle honors through Mine Run and was carried until the end of the war. Sergeant Charles Marquette of Company F carried the banner during the April 2 attack on Petersburg. Though wounded by accidentally stabbing himself on a piece of abatis, Marquette struggled forward and was one of the first to plant his flag on the enemy line. The sergeant also captured a Confederate Flag. On May 10, he was awarded a Medal of Honor for his courage.
Both national colors were kept by the regimental association and eventually were given to the Coleman family for safekeeping. Heirs of the family donated the flags to the Lebanon County Historical Society in1935. Both may be seen at the Society. Coleman may also have presented a blue regimental flag to the regiment in December 1863. A contemporary letter describes this flag while a postwar photograph shows what may be this same flag." The banner apparently has not survived.
Here is a 19th century photo (from Rick's book) showing the two national colors. As you can see, little remained of the first flag (left) so it is impossible to know its exact design.

A few years ago, I gave a talk on Civil War flags at the Lebanon County Historical Society. I did not get to see the flags but they did have this picture of the second national color

Check with the Society to see if the flags are currently on display or if you can make an appointment to see them. Hope this helps.
