Hey I am wondering which American flags were used during the Union army. Was it the 33 star "fort Sumter" flag the 34 star with Kansas or the 35 star one with West Virginia did it change during the Seige? What flag was raised over Vicksburg upon its capitulation

Thank you so much for this! I guess the 35 star flag was only adopted later. I'll have to read up on the 45 IL

The number of stars on the national color of a regiment depended on when the flag was made and who made it. Even though a new state entered the Union, there was no necessity to change a flag that had fewer stars. Flags with 33, 34, and 35 stars continued to used throughout the war.
