Exploded barrel

I was digging the site of a skirmish and I dug this. It sounded like a shell frag but I'm pretty sure it's a blown barrel could I have y'all's opinion on it? It has a site on it

That thing sticking out from the side looks like it could be for attachment to a stock, but we need a better view. If it is, there should be a hole through it. That is a style that was used with long rifles. What time during the war would this be? What units involved and how were they equipped?

It was 1862 and involved some Calvary under Van Dorn. I'm not sure about the units though
