Egos

What I do is read all post except there are a couple that Ignore( not on the ignore list) , because they are polarized in what they post and have a my way or the hiway attitude. (I won't name him/them, since most people know who they are). I enjoy the difference of opinion that some bring since they bring with them the facts not just bluster that some have. The bluster and pushy attitude I just breeze by. And the it's all about "ME" attitude I ignore.

Hi Rhett,

Welcome again. I am going to echo the sentiments of many of the prior posters on this subject. Dont get discouraged, yet, if you are going to post a new thread, try to do a little research to make sure it has not been done before. If it has, it may be a good idea just to add to what has been written. Also, be prepared to defend your position.

There are some people on this forum who do have a sense of entitlement - almost like its a private club and you are intruding. Some of these people are part of a clique and whatever they state gets significant support from their group.

When you have been here for a while I think you will find who is who and act accordingly. Ive learned that "ignore" button is better than getting thrown off site because someone has an agenda or huge ego.

Lastly, there are many, many very knowledgeable people here, several published and considered experts in their fields. Most of these people dont even let you know they are experts. They provide their answer and are content with that. Its those people that I most appreciate about this site.

Brother rehettbuttler1865:

I do not wish to alienate anyone here (but, of course, that is probably inevitable).
I joined this site because I am obsessed with the Civil War, and have been for most of my 60 years.
I read a lot of books, collect authentic Civil War articles, my house looks like a CW museum, and
I love to talk about the Civil War.

Before joining here, I thought I knew a lot--but I now realize, humbly, that I have MUCH to learn.
And I'm willing to learn. It is all so fascinating to me.
And so many of you are very well versed on the entirety of the CW and it's multitude of components.

But I have a bit of a roadblock here:
when I ask a question, many times I am talked down to;
when I make a statement (even just to be provoking so I may learn), I am shot down."
Perhaps my skin isn't tough enough, because I have logged out sometimes angry,
sometimes feeling like I was being put down, sometimes just feeling uncomfortable.
No wonder there aren't many "privates" in this forum--
I imagine some have felt they were out of their league in here.
I have advanced degrees in Theatre...
Does everyone here have a doctorate in the Civil War?
Do any of us know EVERYTHING? -----
Ok, I just exposed my "flank", and am ready for the attack that I feel is impending...

Stay the course

rhettbutler1865,

I have been a member of this forum since the early 1990's and have over 200 books in my den on the American Civil War have posted thousands of times here and I am always amazed about how much I DON'T know about that four year period of our history.

It would be a shame to lose another poster who wants to learn.

Grow a thick hide, always have a sense of humor, and jump in with the rest of us.

Sincerely,
Unionblue
Thank you VERY much! Your reply really made a difference !

One of the draw backs to the Internet and forums such as these is that we can not see the other poster grinning or winking as they reply to us, there are many times when I have replied to someone in the same manner I would if we were sitting across a table sharing coffee and just having a good time, only to irk someone.
OTOH, there are some people on all forums that just have no sense of humor, that really makes it tough.

I believe it is because this forum is Yankee biased.

VERY INFORMATIVE AND HELPFUL! Thanks!

Well put, and very helpful. Thanks!

Hey Rhett,

In case it has not been mentioned before or if you are unaware, rank is based on number of posts. This thread alone has you well on the way to being promoted. Of course being promoted means a party where you pay the tab, but eh, a promotion is a promotion. Hang in there! (The rank structure can be found in the FAQs)
Thank you--maybe I'll reach the rank my dream tells me I was in the war-Major...

You'll have to stick around a while for that! I'm gunning for 2nd Lieutenant myself, the rank CSO Rice served with the 7th Tennessee cavalry (CSA). It seems silly to care, but it's fun.

I just read through one of the threads that probably inspired this post, and I'll repeat what a few other posters have said: pay attention to the names of the people you are talking to. I don't presently have anyone on ignore but I do, in fact, ignore a few people. If they show up on a thread I just find something else to do, because I've heard what they have to say and know that nothing I can say would change it.

Don't go Rhett. I'm a relative newbie here and there have been times when a response to what I thought was a harmless question has left me a little stunned but although I do occasionally feel like an illegitimate child at a family reunion I have found that the people here who I would call typically American, friendly, courteous and welcoming, far outnumber the others.
