I do not wish to alienate anyone here (but, of course, that is probably inevitable). I joined this site because I am obsessed with the Civil War, and have been for most of my 60 years. I read a lot of books, collect authentic Civil War articles, my house looks like a CW museum, and I love to talk about the Civil War. Before joining here, I thought I knew a lot--but I now realize, humbly, that I have MUCH to learn. And I'm willing to learn. It is all so fascinating to me. And so many of you are very well versed on the entirety of the CW and it's multitude of components. But I have a bit of a roadblock here: when I ask a question, many times I am talked down to; when I make a statement (even just to be provoking so I may learn), I am'shot down." Perhaps my skin isn't tough enough, because I have logged out sometimes angry, sometimes feeling like I was being put down, sometimes just feeling uncomfortable. No wonder there aren't many "privates" in this forum--I imagine some have felt they were out of their league in here. I have advanced degrees in Theatre...Does everyone here have a doctorate in the Civil War? Do any of us know EVERYTHING? -----Ok, I just exposed my "flank", and am ready for the attack that I feel is impending...

I know what you mean. There are lots of good knowledgeable folks out there that contribute so much to Civil War history.
But there are a few who are cantankerous regardless of what you may post. They are so polarized in their thinking that their minds are permanently set. It is sad that some folk are like that. But that is life. Forget the negativity you may receive.
Post you thoughts and expertise. I get shot down a lot by a few. Sometimes it is hard to put you thoughts into the right words and people may misread you.History is what has happened. How we interpret it may differ. I have been active in Civil War
study for many years. But I am way behind a lot of folk that contribute to the forums but I try to learn something new each day. The only forum that I have any expertise( very little) in is Arms and Ammunition. I have been collecting Civil War guns for over 70 years but there is still lots of information for me to acquire. KEEP POSTING! you have something to offer that someone else needs!

Communication styles can often be problematical. Statements made "just to be provoking" are probably the worst way to gain friendly enlightenment in a forum like this, which values rational discussion ... especially when you are using hostile and intemperate language. If you want to learn, try not to sound like you think you already know the answers.

Relax and enjoy. Are there folks here who believe they are in possession of all knowledge and willing to tell you, at some length, that you are wrong, sometimes in less than friendly terms? Sure, but often they are just talking to themselves and their cadre of sycophants. There are truly some experts here who are willing to share their expertise. I learn here everyday. Don't take the know-it-alls so seriously and ask whatever you want to know about. This is a fabulous place to learn, despite so of the noise. Enjoy it and learn but be willing to filter out the noise.

Your response is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much! Speaking of Arms, I just got my Union officer's sword, in very (almost mint) good condition. Put it above the fireplace.

Thank you-VERY helpful reply.

Thank you for your insight. I DON'T know the answers, and never pretend to...

I know how you feel. my friend. Lots of knowledge on this forum. I will say though, that every time I've asked a question ( which has been frequent), I've gotten some great responses, from some really articulate folks. I have noticed that if I make a statement, I'd better be ready to back it up with facts.
I just try to enjoy the journey, and learn as much as I can........

Hang tough, Rhett, because you will learn more than you can imagine. There is an IGNORE button for a reason. The majority of people here just want to help you learn, so don't pay attention to anyone whom you find annoying. There are always annoying people in any group, but most of us are really nice.:x3:

The fact that this site is moderated is huge. Keeps it under some semblance of control.
There IS a lot to learn.

You do have to just grin and bear it as far as being slapped down.

There is also a favored POV. A certain angle inside of a certain line of thinking. Even an assumed sense of infallibility.

BUT it is not overwhelming.

Sometimes you just have to stop and let that person(s) be right and let it go at that.

EGO is a irrational thing.

You're right...I'm letting it get to me too much. I didn't join to become upset--life deals me enough of that.
